Meet the great team of people at Hey Optometrists, where the people make the difference
- Paul HeyOptometrist
Originally from Southport in the North West of England, Paul trained at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology where he later worked as a clinical instructor.
Paul practiced optometry in the UK for 5 years before emigrating to New Zealand in 1990. He has worked in the Sydenham practice ever since (actually in the same exam room!) and became co-owner of Hey Optometrists in 1996.
In addition to his position as an optometrist, where he has an interest in contact lenses and low vision work, Paul is the practice’s frame buyer and particularly enjoys his role in selecting the styles and ranges that are available in the practice.
Outside work, Paul loves travelling, photography and is a big sports fan. With season tickets to Canterbury rugby, he enjoys supporting both the Crusaders and the All Blacks, but his biggest sporting passion is following F1 motor racing.
- Debra HeyOptometrist
Having been born in Twickenham, maybe it was inevitable that Debra would eventually move half way round the world to find a place where really good rugby is played.
Also trained in Manchester, Debra has been practicing as an optometrist since 1985 and worked in a variety of UK practices before moving to Christchurch in 1990. After 6 years working in Riccarton, she became co-owner of Hey Optometrists in 1996.
With great organizational skills and a love of figures, Debra looks after the management and financial aspects of the business, as well as performing her optometric duties, where she has a keen interest in children's vision.
When she isn’t working, Debra enjoys travel, reading, Sudoku and is a regular supporter at Canterbury’s home rugby games, having been a season ticket holder since the epic 2002 season.
- ClaireReceptionist / Optical Assistant
Originally from Nottingham in England, Claire worked in the retail and recruitment sectors before emigrating to New Zealand with her family in 2008.
Initially based in Invercargill, Claire moved to Christchurch in 2012, joining the Hey optometrists team in 2015. With a lively and fun loving personality, Claire enjoys meeting people and combines her administrative duties with helping people choose great looking eyewear and assisting the optometrists with performing the additional visual screening tests required by some patients.
A self-confessed professional coffee hunter, Claire also enjoys running for peace (mental rather than world) along with the fine things in life, in her case chocolate and gin.
- TeganReceptionist / Optical Assistant
After studying fine arts in Auckland, majoring in graphic design, Tegan returned to her native Christchurch in 2011. She gained experience in fashion retail, administration and graphic design before joining the Hey Optometrists team in August 2014.
Cheerful, outgoing and combining her knowledge of fashion and design with a great sense of style, Tegan is the ideal person to help you choose the perfect frame. She also makes a valuable contribution in helping choose many of the frame and sunglass styles available in the practice.
When she isn't working or renovating her home, Tegan enjoys photography and art, having designed and released her own range of ceramics.
Tegan is currently on parental leave, following the birth of her first child.
- ChloeReceptionist / Optical Assistant
A proud West Coater born and bred, Chloe hails from Hokitika, only moving to Christchurch shortly before joining Hey Optometrists in 2016.
Previously, Chloe gained experience in administration and hospitality, including working at one of Paul and Debra’s favourite restaurants, the much missed Café de Paris in Hokitika.
A busy wife and mum of two, Chloe loves to meet people and have a chat, ideal for her front line reception role. She also enjoys helping people find great looking frames and sunglasses (and trying them on for herself).
Chloe has a great love for food, especially cheeses and baking and also enjoys horse riding and outdoor pursuits.
- MickeyReceptionist / Optical Assistant
Having been born and raised in small town South Canterbury, Mickey spent five years working in hospitality and honing her barista skills before joining the team at Hey Optometrists.
With a friendly and bubbly personality and strong computer skills, Mickey’s role combines front line reception and administration work with helping people choose good looking eyewear.
An avid reader, when she isn’t working Mickey enjoys indulging her passion for art and books. She also likes walking, especially with her dogs, a pair of Huskies.
